Survey: Resilience Levels in Individuals With and Without A History of Fertility Problems

Mar 31

You are invited to be in a research study that has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Pacific University and has an anticipated completion date of July 2011. The purpose of this study is to investigate similarities and differences between individuals with and without personal experiences with fertility problems. “Fertility problems” include: medically defined infertility (i.e., inability to get pregnant after 12 months of having unprotected sex), an extended period of difficulty getting pregnant, and/or miscarriages. You were invited to participate because you are an adult over the age of 18 who has reported having (currently or in the past) a desire to have children. This study will take place online. The results of the study will be used to inform health professionals who work with individuals with fertility problems.

3. Study Invitation, Purpose, Location, and Dates

Please read this form carefully and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in this study. You are welcome to keep a copy of this form for your records. This study is being conducted by Rachel Kvamme and Jennifer Antick, Ph.D.

4. Participant Characteristics and Exclusionary Criteria

You are invited to participate in this study if you meet the following criteria: you have (or have had) a desire to have children and you are currently 18 years of age. If you are unable to read and understand English or are currently diagnosed with a medical or psychological condition that makes it difficult to read, understand, and answer questions, it is recommended that you exit this survey at this time.

5. Study Materials and Procedures

If you agree to be in this study, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that asks you to answer questions related to how you respond to and cope with stress. For those participants who have experience with fertility problems, you will be asked to answer questions related to this experience as well (e.g. type and duration of the problem, whether treatment was pursued). We are seeking approximately 111 individuals to complete this survey, half with a history of fertility problems and half without. This questionnaire will ask you about how you respond to stressful events, how you cope with stressful events, and how you are currently functioning. If you have current or past experiences with fertility problems, you will also be asked to answer questions related to this. The questionnaire should take approximately 8 to 10 minutes and will be available after you have read this document and agreed to participate in the study. It is recommended that you complete the survey in a private and quiet place of your choosing where internet access is available. Your answers to the questions are not stored until the entire questionnaire is completed, so if you are unable to finish the survey you may return at a later time and begin again. There is no cost associated with participating in the study other than a commitment of your time for approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Upon completion of the survey, if you wish to receive the results of the study, you can click a link that will direct you to a separate survey where you can provide your contact information.
